They come up semi-frequently around here, almost always with a 360, auto, and wood paneling. I’d prefer the straight 6 with a manual, but I’ve actually never seen one for sale.

I’ve always liked these, but I’ve been looking more seriously at them because they’re my girlfriends second favourite car. Her favourite is the Nissan Pao, which we have a surprising number of locally.

Because they're the greatest SUV ever made.

One of the first (if not the first) luxury SUVs sold.

I would argue that the 80 Series LC could rival that, but I think you're right

I'm tempted, I'm not getting one till my gf gets her license though, I don't have all that much desire to drive one

Yeah but it's not American so it can't be the greatest at anything.

Because they’re a goddamn American classic?

Also, I think they are surprisingly rare because they were notorious rust buckets, so many of them have returned to the earth from whence they came.

they’re getting scarce, so many of them have rusted away. Plus it contains the second-longest running AMC engine after the 4.0 six.

They’re the cool “look at my retro lux SUV” thing in rich areas. There are a bunch of restoration shops buying up clean survivors. They go for $45-60k after restoration.

60 Series is best series

in short its because they are iconic. same as FJ40 and defenders. and they never made those with a straight 6 and manual after like 1970. the 360 auto was the only option on later wagoneers

Actually Land Rover Series is best Series because it is a Series.

I have owned one of these. 1986 360 selec-trac. It was a beast of a vehicle that did more than I ever asked of it except produce acceptable fuel economy (8 MPG no matter what). Mine had 120k and the later chrysler torqueflite 727 3 speed. These things are either $1000 or $25000 because they are either clapped out rusty heaps or amazingly pristine. I got mine for $400 and pulled it out of weeds. New gas and rear window bits and brake lines later it was reliable and very Bruce. If you do buy one be sure to look for frame rot aft of the fuel tank right before the frame kicks up. The fuel tank skid plate (from the factory) had a nasty habit of holding bits of the earth and rusting out the frame. And FYI you could get the Grand Wagoneer (84-91) with a 256 4MT but they were exceedingly rare. Most of those were found in the 2 door FSJ Wagoneer/Cherokee

But this is Canada. That said, there are no Canadian classics to be expensive instead

Also www.bjsoffroad.com and www.teamgrandwagoneer.com will be your best friends. Highly recommend the stainless brake line kit from BJs. Excellent fitment and a fair price. Plus everything is present with the correct nuts

So if I bring a Miura to another country it’s no longer valuable as an Italian classic?

because hipsters suddenly love these things, causing prices to skyrocket.

semi-related Wagoneer story: When I was 4, my dad bought his first brand new car, a 1982 AMC Concorde wagon, with the 2.5L and a 5 speed. That car was back to the AMC/Jeep dealer so much that I actually thought we owned a Grand Wagoneer (the loaner from the dealer).
